This year, the NOS Jeugdjournaal has been on television for 40 years. To celebrate this, the Royal Dutch Mint issues a commemorative coin, which can now be ordered at royaldutchmint.com. The NOS Jeugdjournaal 5 Euro Coin is minted on behalf of the Ministry of Finance.
The NOS JeugdjournaalThe NOS Jeugdjournaal is one of the longest-running children’s news programs in the world. The editors bring cheerful news, but also discuss heavy news topics in a clear and child-friendly way. Before the program started, research had shown that children needed a serious news program. Children are actively involved in the news: for example, they can respond daily on the website and during the NOS Jeugdjournaal election debate schoolchildren are allowed to interview the party leaders. This is unique in the world. The program has won various prizes over the years, such as the Gouden Stuiver (the most important prize for children’s programs in the Netherlands) and an NPO Zapp Award.
The Design
The NOS Jeugdjournaal Vijfje was designed by Gabriel Lester. Lester’s design was inspired by the distortions and imperfections that sometimes occur in a television picture: glitches. King Willem-Alexander is portrayed on the obverse. The portrait is depicted in two tones, giving the impression that it glitches. This gives it an electric character. The reverse shows a globe, the symbol of the daily world news. The same glitch effect is applied to this image, making the coin as a whole reminiscent of a television screen.
