Description

The Royal Mint of Belgium issues a pure gold 12 ½ euro coin every year. For the next four years, it will always have a royal touch. The second issue in this mini-series puts Queen Mathilde in the spotlight.

Golden jubilee
You can't tell by looking at her, but Queen Mathilde is blowing out 50 candles! How she will celebrate her birthday on 20 January is not known, but this anniversary will certainly be duly celebrated.

In the run-up to her 50th birthday, Her Majesty the Queen was by no means standing still! She took the opportunity to spread a positive message about mental well-being in Belgium. Under the motto "Together in motion for mental well-being", Queen Mathilde undertook a walking or cycling tour between July and December 2022 in all ten provinces of the country (plus the Brussels Region) together with people and organizations committed to projects around mental well-being. Halfway through each tour, His Majesty the King joined in to show that he, too, is committed to his wife's initiative.

That they are a sporty royal couple is obvious. Mathilde and Filip first met on a tennis court in 1996. According to King Filip, it was love at first sight. In 1999, the couple married. Now both their coin portraits also appear together for the first time on a gold euro commemorative coin.

Royal coin
To add extra lustre to H.M. the Queen's 50th birthday, the Royal Mint of Belgium is now issuing a magnificent 12½-euro coin, struck in the purest gold and in the very highest Proof quality. The obverse shows the portrait of the jubilant Queen Mathilde in profile to the left, to the right her monogram with the number '50' below and the initials IB of designer Iris Bruijns. On the reverse, the portrait of King Philippe, the face value and the trilingual country indication appear. A luxurious case and a numbered Certificate of Authenticity complete this subtle numismatic gem.
